We live in a town where people are often told they are weak if they seek counseling. Truth is, reaching out for help is a sign of bravery and strength. We are not meant to do this hard work alone. We actually grow stronger when we lean into others, who prove to be safe, and allow them to help us.

Therapists are simply just a friend you pay to listen to you complain.

People often believe that therapists are people who offer advice after you share your dilemma or story. This isn’t the case. A therapist is someone who holds space for you and helps you to find your truth. A therapist has been trained to know when to listen and when to see if sharing information will be helpful. A therapist is trained to make it safe for you to share what they are doing that is an isn’t helpful for you.

Counseling is something rich privileged people do for their whole lives.

Therapy is often used for people who have been doing things on their own, all alone. Therapy has been effective for people from all socio economic backgrounds. Therapy is a great thing for people who want to work on their anxiety.

Therapy will last for years.

Therapy without an agreed ending works for many. Some of the most effective therapy is when the therapist and client agree ahead of time on the number of sessions to work together for a “piece of work”. Clients have found that doing 10 to 20 sessions knowing there will be closure creates focus and an opportunity for positive closure. Once that “chapter” of work is done, we can agree to meet again in 30 to 90 days to do another chapter of work or wait until the need arises.

Regardless of whether we work together for an agreed amount of sessions or an ongoing basis, we will set goals and check in routinely. We will work together to determine goals and when we routinely check-in, we will determine if the current goals still feel relevant or if we want to set new goals.
